Earthwork in a Very Wet Town

Excavation contractors in Washougal work in a town that gets far more rain than Vancouver. Its climate table lists about 84.2 inches of precipitation a year, more than twice Vancouver's figure, along with about 10 inches of snow. Record temperatures run from 3 to 108 degrees. Drainage is the core of almost every project.

River town

The Washougal River runs along the north side of downtown and separates the city from Camas. Anglers fish it for steelhead and salmon, and properties near it face shoreline and floodplain rules. Washougal sits at about 82 feet.

History

Joseph E. C. Durgin established the townsite in 1880, platted May 6, 1880. The city incorporated in November 1908, and a textile mill opened in 1910 that Pendleton Woolen Mills acquired in 1912. Older homes near the mill and downtown have aging lines.

Growth

The population grew from 14,095 in 2010 to 17,039 in 2020, with an estimate of 17,944 in 2024. Newer homes climb the hills north of town.

Common Washougal jobs

  • French and curtain drains
  • Tightlines to approved outlets
  • Utility trenching
  • Hillside driveway grading and clearing

Working in heavy rain

With this much rain, erosion control and timing matter even more. We stage work, cover stockpiles and keep rocked entrances in place.

Hills north of downtown

Newer neighborhoods climb the slopes above the river. On those lots, rain that would soak into flat ground runs off instead, so driveways need ditches and culverts, and houses need tightlined downspouts and curtain drains on the uphill side. Cut slopes are kept short and covered until they are stabilized.
