Getting the Ground Ready for a Foundation
Home site and crawl space excavation prepares the ground for a foundation: stripping topsoil, cutting the pad, digging footings, excavating a crawl space or basement, and grading so water drains away. In Clark County, most homes are built over crawl spaces, and owners also add garages, shops, ADUs and additions on existing lots.
Gravel or clay
On the flood-gravel flats, footings often bear on firm gravel and dig easily, though loose gravel can cave in deeper cuts. On clay hills, soil holds a cut well when dry but softens and swells when wet, and footings may need to go deeper to reach suitable bearing. A soils report, when required, sets the depth.
Crawl spaces and drainage
A crawl space is a low spot that collects water if the grade is wrong. We excavate the crawl to plan, slope it toward a drain or sump if specified, and grade the outside so water runs away from the foundation.
Costs
HomeBlue estimates foundation excavation for a new home without a basement in Vancouver at $2,500 to $4,400, and a basement dig-out at $4,200 to $7,400. HomeAdvisor lists basement and crawl space excavation at $5,000 to $15,000 nationally and new foundations at $1,500 to $10,000.
Wet weather
Soil exposed to rain turns to mud, and wet footing bottoms must be cleaned out before concrete. We schedule digs to pour soon after, and keep crushed rock on hand for access and footing bases.
Permits
Building permits from the City of Vancouver or Clark County cover most foundation excavation. We work from approved plans.
Building in stages
On many sites, clearing and stripping happen first, then the pad and footings, then backfill after the foundation. We schedule each stage around the builder and the weather so the site is never left open longer than needed.
Gravel or clay changes the price
Gravel digs fast but may need extra trench protection; clay holds a cut but slows down in wet weather and may need more rock for access. We price the soil you have.
Rocked access
A rocked construction entrance and a firm working area keep trucks and machines out of the mud and keep mud off public streets, which permits usually require.
Footing drains
Footing drains around crawl spaces and basements collect water at the base of the foundation and carry it to an outlet. We dig room for them and coordinate with the foundation crew so they are installed before backfill.

Home Site & Crawl Space Excavation Questions
Do I need a soils report?
Some sites do, especially on slopes or clay. The permit office will say.
Can you dig footings in the rain?
Light rain, yes, but footings are cleaned and poured quickly. Heavy rain can delay work.
Basement or crawl space?
Crawl spaces are most common here. Basements depend on soil, groundwater and budget.
Do you dig for ADUs?
Yes, footings, utility trenches and site grading.
What happens to the dirt from my crawl space?
Some is reused for backfill and grading; the rest is hauled. HomeBlue puts Vancouver hauling at $400 to $600 per truckload.
